Is It Safe to Partition My C Drive with Files on It

I just got a new HP laptop with 1TB of storage space in total. There are 2 partitions. C drive is 900 GB, and D is 100 GB. Can someone tell me if it's safe to partition the C drive with files and how to split the C drive into multiple partitions without losing files and the Windows system? Thanks!

Yes, it is safe to partition the C drive with files on it.

The shrinking and creating operations usually will not cause data loss on your C drive. I recommend you use a reliable tool with a simple interface and easy-to-follow operations, EaseUS Partition Master, to make sure the partitioning process will be successfully done.

Follow the guide here to partition your C drive:

Step 1. Launch EaseUS Partition Master. Select C drive and click on "Resize/Move."

Step 2. Drag the dot to shrink the C drive and create unallocated space. Then, click "OK" and "Apply" to start.

Step 3. Once there's an unallocated space on your disk, you can select it and click "Create."

Step 4. Customize the settings and click "OK," "Execute * Task," and "Apply." to create a new partition from unallocated space.

If you don't want to use third-party software, there is also a built-in tool provided by Microsoft called Disk Management.

However, its interface is a little bit unclear, and the shrinking and creating processes require an exact amount of space to be input for partitioning the drive, which might be unfriendly to beginners and may cause unexpected problems by incorrect operation. In addition, you may also encounter "Extend Volume greyed out" because of its limits.

The steps are listed below:

Step 1. Click "Windows" + "R" to open Run Command and then input diskmgmt.msc.

Step 2. Right-click on C drive and click on "Shrink Volume."

Step 3. Enter the amount you want to shrink from the C drive and click "Shrink."

Step 4. Right-click on the unallocated space and click on "New Simple Volume."

Step 5. Enter the amount you want to allocate and format it to create a new partition.
