What Is the GPT Partition Scheme and Differences from MBR

When you upgrade your Windows OS to a higher version, the system disk partition style must be set to support either UEFI mode or legacy BIOS:

MBR - Master Boot Record is an older disk partition table, a loader for the operating system, the master boot code, the disk partition table, and the boot signature. It only supports legacy BIOS boot mode.

GPT - As a newer disk partition style, GPT contains information about how the drive's partitions are set up and how to start the OS. Regarding boot mode, the GPT disk should boot from UEFI.

MBR vs. GPT - The MBR drive cannot create a partition larger than 2 TB, or the extend volume option will be greyed out. If you format a 4TB hard disk as MBR, you can only use 2TB
